Our individualised capacity building travel training program is designed to empower NDIS participants to be more independent, confident, and safe when traveling on their own. By building their skills to use public transport, they can save their NDIS funding for other capacity-building services to further enhance their independence.

About the Program

Twice a week, participants are empowered to building their skills and confidence. They will receive individualised support to travel as a team from the city of Adelaide to destination hubs in the north, south, east, and west of metropolitan Adelaide. Over 13 weeks, group members are supported to build their skills to work together to plan fun and interesting locations across Adelaide to visit to build their travel training skills. During each session the group reflects on their learning in a cafe setting, the cost of which is covered by the program. In a supportive and social small-group environment, participants will:

  • Plan Trips Independently: Learn how to organise a trip to any part of metropolitan Adelaide using buses, trains, and trams;
  • Prepare for Travel: Understand when to pack which essential items for different weather conditions and travel lengths such as food, drinks, clothing, house keys, chargers, etc;
  • Ensure Safety: Develop strategies to stay safe, including what to do in emergencies;
  • Manage Metro Cards: Learn to purchase, use, and recharge Adelaide Metro cards;
  • Navigate Destinations: Gain skills and confidence to walk around unfamiliar places without getting lost;
  • Create Personal Maps: Build a personalised map of locations they have visited for future reference.

NDIS Plan Savings

Our program empowers participants to not only travel independently but can also achieve significant savings to NDIS plans. By reducing the need for paid transport services, participants can redirect their NDIS funds towards other capacity-building supports to achieve further independence.

Collectively, our 8 graduates to date have currently saved more than $120,000 a year.*

This is equivalent to 1750 hours of extra capacity building services per year.**

*Approximately based on individualised allocated NDIS funding. **Based on current 1:1 capacity building NDIS rates.

Using the popular Dungeons & Dragons (DnD) system, players will engage with other enthusiasts in a small group setting to build their resilience and their interpersonal, adaptability, problem solving and other employability skills in a uniquely fun and collaborative way. Set in a rich, interactive fantasy world, players will embark on epic quests where their choices and collaboration directly impact the outcome of the story. These campaigns or not traditional pre-made campaigns but are individually created and delivered with the aim of building up the specific skills of each player in the group, in preparation for the world of work.

Players will be empowered to develop the following skills:

  • Active listening: attention to both NPC dialogues and the communication from fellow players is crucial to understanding other players or NPC’s in order to make informed decisions and positively building the group dynamic;
  • Communication: through conversations with non-player characters and fellow players, group members will develop and practice clear expression of ideas, feelings, and needs;
  • Conflict resolution: throughout the campaign, players will face challenges and disagreements that require collaborative problem-solving, negotiation, and emotional regulation;
  • Teamwork: players must work together and combine their unique abilities and talents to overcome obstacles, complete missions, and defeat enemies;
  • Adaptability to change: as campaigns, battles and negotiations progress, to succeed players will have opportunity to build their adaptability skills as new information, unexpected developments, and the occasional ambush and betrayal will require quick thinking and reaction skills;
  • Acceptance: through the campaign, like in life, not everything will go according to plan, and when things don’t, this provides the players the opportunity to build their resilience and acceptance skills. Players will be empowered to learn how to not focus on the failure but instead what they can learn from it;
  • Goal setting and planning: players will be encouraged to take a proactive and considered approach to the many obstacles and challenges that they encounter. Working together as a group to identify the different possible pathways to success, identifying and weighing up risks and reward and making use of previous experience to create their own unique and optimal plans to victory;
  • Foundational Literacy and Numeracy: During the gameplay, players will be supported to build their basic literacy and numeracy skills as they roll and add up different dice, subtract damage, divide treasure, take notes, read through lore, tackle riddles and much more.

Shayden joined the video game testing program, QA for Gaming, in October 2024 as an experienced gamer who wanted to explore what employment opportunities might look like. This was an exciting step in testing a career path that would be a great fit for him. In his words for him, this was also about a pathway to become a more responsible adult with a future goal of renting his own home and contributing his employment taxes back to society. He also joined to get out of the house and build his confidence and skills to work with other young people he didn’t know. Prior to this, Shayden begun his learning journey at Youth Options in May 2023 and over 14 months developed his confidence and skills in cooking, resilience, and career development.

Shayden brought his love of video gaming playing and reading to the program, as well as his skills in critical thinking, relating to others, and giving feedback. Over 3 months he completed level 1 and level 2 and gained 5 South Australian Skills Commission accredited micro-credentials in: play testing, bug testing, game test plan writer, game test case writer, and game play testing lead.

During this time Shayden grew more confident in his testing skills, giving group presentations, and demonstrating his initiative including pro-actively asking questions to improve his learning and performance. These are employability skills that employers highly value alongside his technical skills in video game testing.

We thought Shayden was so good, we employed him as a QA for Gaming peer leader. In this role he is responsible for co-supporting participants with their technical learning and soft skill development alongside our highly experienced QA tester. Alongside his technical skills, Shayden’s flair for establishing rapport, his facilitation skills, and giving constructive feedback have really shone.

Finn began our service in February 2023 and wanted to work but was unsure of his pathway and needed support to become work ready. Over 23 months, Finn developed his skills and confidence in the preparation, cutting, grinding, work health and safety, and the welding of metal in a very small group setting with other welders-in-training. Youth Options also supported him to gain his white card so he could work in the construction industry. Finn also developed his skills in punctuality, focus, communication and teamwork. Importantly he also improved his ability to adapt to unexpected changes in preparation for the world of work. These employability skills are key skills that employers as much as technical skills.

Finn made the most of his time in workshop and really enjoyed the setting of meeting new people and building friendships while learning together. He developed connections with other mentees and a friendly member of the workshop who was always quick to praise other mentees about their work.

Building resilience for a brighter future

During this time Finn also joined our resilience program to find a career pathway that was a great fit for him. He was empowered to identify and explore different trades and with the support of his family gained work experiences including mechanic and plumbing before finding landscape construction.

He also identified that improving his literacy and numeracy was key to achieving a traineeship. However, actually working on these skills was a major challenge. He used what he learnt in resilience about awareness, acceptance, goals, motivation, growth mindset and more to unlock the secrets to motivation. He became a self-starter and willingly worked on his math skills independently. Finn also designed his own resilience challenges to practice when welding in our workshop. This integrated approach across programs and mentors allowed his team to better understand how to better empower him to build his resilience quicker and for Finn to understand more deeply how resilience could help him to not just get a job, but keep it.

Achieving Employment with a Traineeship

In June 2024, Finn was offered a traineeship in landscape construction and is currently being paid to work for a contractor as he studies to complete a certificate III in landscape construction. Finn showcased his commitment to his learning at Youth Options where he continued to come in at the end of his working week as a trainee and develop his welding skills in our welding bays.

We are so proud of Finn and are excited for his working future!

Testimonial from his parents:

We feel he has gained excellent skills that will assist him in work and at home. It has given him huge confidence to try new skills and not block a pathway which at first he might not realise he would enjoy. He felt so supported and comfortable at Youth options that he could extend himself and take opportunities that previously he wouldn’t of taken.

He identified landscaping and horticulture and joined the Youth Options Garden Squad to test whether this was a pathway for him. He also began our Drive Me driving mentoring to achieve his independence. Having a driver’s licence also broadens his choice of employment as having one is often a requirement of more skilled and secure work.

Growing a Career with Youth Options Garden Squad

Hamish joined the squad for 12 months to develop his confidence and skills in horticulture and landscaping and his employability skills. Our highly skilled mentor with extensive gardening experience worked with Hamish in a way that worked for him.

Through Garden Squad, Hamish was able to access real world industry projects to develop his capacity with our partnership with the City of Adelaide Horticulture team. Through more than ten verge garden projects across the Adelaide CBD, he developed his skills in: work health and safety, plant identification, plant propagation, soil preparation, irrigation installation, seasonal planting, as well as lawn and plant maintenance with hedge trimming, lawn mowing, and weeding. Hamish also developed his employability skills in working with others, organisation, and problem-solving which employers value as much as technical skills.

Hamish realised he wanted a career path in horticulture and not just casual work. We helped him identify that a traineeship would be a great way to achieve this goal because on completion he would receive a certificate III in horticulture as an industry recognised qualification. Longer term, this will give him eligibility for a greater variety of employment with better pay and conditions than causal unqualified work.

To achieve this goal Hamish needed to work on his numeracy. He showed real leadership and commitment in his own success by working on this independently until he reached the required standard.

Achieving Employment with a Traineeship

In January 2025, Hamish began a traineeship with a reputable council in their Horticulture team as an employment of Maxima through their group training organisation. The result is Hamish is being paid to study alongside the training he is receiving with the horticulture team.

We are so proud of Hamish and are excited for his working future.

Steven began our service in August 2023 and over 15 months developed his skills as a barista in our individualised and intensive barista skills capacity building program. Our highly skilled mentor with extensive barista experience and a double degree in social sciences and psychological sciences empowered him to make a great coffee on our manual barista machine, in a way that worked for Steven. He has developed his knowledge and skills in espresso theory, milk texturing, latte art, food safety, machine maintenance. He can make the full range of typical warm beverages on offer at any cafe using cow’s milk and alternative milks. In a very small group setting he also developed his employability skills to work with others including the art of small talk while taking coffee orders using our point of sale system.

As his confidence grew, we linked him to multiple work experiences and paid barista work to further build and test his readiness in industry conditions.

Working Collaboratively with our DES partnership

When Steven was ready to transition into open employment, we invited our DES partner Multiple Solutions to work with our career development service to find a role that would be a great fit for him. Through our partnership, we were able to convey our deep understanding of what a great job for him would look like and how he could be set up for success.

His Multiple Solutions Business Development Manager identified a barista and team leader role at a reputable ice creamery. The result of this partnership is that Steven feels at home in his barista role and confident about his working future. These collaborative approaches to supporting young people back into employment are vital. This model result.

Keith started our service after his employment in the hospitality industry came to an unexpected end. His goals were to rebuild his confidence and to enhance his cooking skills to enjoy better quality meals at home. He also wanted to improve his cooking skills and achieve his driver’s licence so he could have more choice in choosing a great job for him in hospitality.

Holistic Service Design

To achieve his goals, Keith undertook our cooking skills program to use his creativity and interest in cooking to develop his skills with his mentor who has nearly 4 decades of experience as a commercial baker. Over 15 months, his mentor used Keith’s passion and positive experiences with cooking to develop his skills to improve his mental health and openness to new work possibilities. Keith can now cook a suite of tasty and nutritionally varied recipes that he can use to plan his meals for the week as part of becoming ready for living independently.

Skill Development for a Career Pathway

In October 2024, Keith also achieved his driver’s licence through 13 months of focussed and consistent effort via our Drive Me program as a key milestone in his journey towards a career pathway. Having a driver’s licence empowers him with a more convenient and efficient way to travel in the community. Longer term this improves his eligibility for a greater variety of jobs that are higher paid typically require a driver’s licence. It is for this reason Youth Options offer’s our Drive Me program as part of our holistic and independence focussed capacity building service model..

A bright future ahead

Having completed our service and ready for his next role, Keith has achieved employment with a large defence company in Adelaide's north with support from DES provider Interact Australia. Keith is now feeling positive about his working future and we are very proud of him.

Jaxon began his service with Youth Options in August 2022 and wanted to enhance his independence through the development of his communication skills, employability skills, and his adaptability as part of his pathway to employment preparedness. In the two years to date he has been empowered by the following services while he completes his bachelor degree in psychology.

Holistic Service Design

We have facilitated Jaxon’s development of his: communication and social skills through our Dungeon’s and Dragon’s communication skills for employment program; his adaptability and growth mindset through our resilience program; his employability skills and technical skills for part time work in the hospitality industry in our barista skills program; and his driving skills through our Drive Me program. These services have supported Jaxon to develop his confidence, resilience and skills in many areas. Not only has this greater enhanced his readiness for employment but it has helped him be clearer on what he wants from life and how to achieve it.

Cultivation of longer-term capacity and opportunity

In July 2024, Jaxon achieved his driver’s licence through our Drive Me program as a key milestone in his journey towards a career pathway. Having a driver’s licence empowers him with a more convenient and efficient way to travel in the community. Longer term it also increases his eligibility for a greater variety and depth of higher paid jobs which often require a driver’s licence. It is for this reason Youth Options offer’s our Drive Me program as part of our holistic and independence focussed capacity building service model.

Transition to Employment

So impressed were we with Jaxon’s attention to detail, problem solving, and blossoming demeanour, we have employed him in a front of house administration role. He has showcased the development of his skills from his ability to fulfill his responsibilities on reception as well as taking care of record keeping and database maintenance. He has also supported our NDIS with conducting research for our practice framework resource suite. We are excited about his working future and look forward to his transition to employment in a career of his choice when he completes his degree.”

Carter arrived in our service in June 2022 wanting to add to his employment history in Darwin where he worked as a barista and to develop his confidence in his working future. Over 24 months he was empowered through the below services to be ready to transition to employment.

Employment Preparedness

Starting in our career development program, he explored what types of hospitality work and employers he wanted to work with and developed a plan to achieve this. This included building his work preparedness by refining his barista skills, customer service skills, and employability skills. He did this in a simulated work environment through our very small group barista skills program where he received individualised guidance from our mentor with industry experience. He also achieved his responsible serving of alcohol (RSA) certificate through our SA Government grant funded HOSPO Prepped program as part of his re-entry into the hospitality industry in Adelaide.

A Responsive Service Design

During this time we were asked to empower him to build his confidence and skills to independently catch public transport from his home to our training facility in the Adelaide CBD. In eight weeks not only did Carter experience greater independence and confidence when travelling, he also eliminated the need to fund travel supports. These savings empowered him to use his NDIS funding to invest in other services and strengthen his capacity and longer-term independence.

Developing Partnerships for Employment Transition

Our career development mentor used their deep insights of Carter and his employment goals to connect him to suitable work experience. This included work experience with SkyCity in the Adelaide CBD where the mentor negotiated an individualised placement tailored to Carter. So successful was this experience, they have employed Carter in one of their restaurants. They have consistently demonstrated a strong commitment and capability to set Carter’s employment up for success and have remained individualised in their support of him in the workplace.

As part of our wrap around model to sustain Carter’s employment, we have also invited our DES partner Multiple Solutions to support Carter as part of his success story. Their employment consultants are collaboratively supporting him as a model of support that allows each service to bring their unique skill set for the same client focussed end result.

We are thrilled for Hamish who has started his employment journey with Show Support in the event hire industry and we look forward to him furthering his skills and experience. Over the past 3 years, Hamish’s service has evolved as his confidence, skills and interests have grown.

Pathway Exploration

Hamish started with an interest in woodworking and developed his technical skills through individualised woodwork projects based on his interests. Since then he also developed an interest in welding and later added this to his learning program. Through these twice weekly workshop sessions he has also developed his employability skills as he has learnt to work with others in the very small group format in our workshop.

A Responsive Service Design

Hamish realised that to succeed in the world of work, he needed to build his social confidence and his communication skills. Through our Dungeon’s and Dragon’s social skills capacity building program, not only has his social confidence increased tremendously, he has learnt how to adapt his communication in different situations for different purposes.

Later he recognised he also needed to improve his adaptability as he found it challenging to respond productively to unexpected changes in situations. We also empowered him to see that he needed to work on his numeracy in order to move close towards an employment pathway. Through our resilience program, he has learnt how to improve his motivation and perform tasks he finds challenging, independently. Not only has he been able to better respond to unexpected changes in his simulated employment environment in the workshop, but in his own time at home he now regularly practices his maths skills via an online learning platform.

A Case Management Approach

An important part of empowering Hamish with his learning was consistency of approach across his team of mentors. Through our case management approach, his resilience mentor also empowered his workshop mentors to consistently support him to build his resilience across his multiple workshop sessions a week. This repetition and consistency was key for his learning success.

Longer term, Hamish has a goal to work in set production. He currently receives guidance, insight and inspiration from his woodworking mentor who produced stunt props for the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie filmed in South Australia. He also has plans to complete a certificate in set production and metal fabrication.

His capacity building journey has evolved over 4 years with Youth Options with the current highlight being his employment in a welding role with Southern Cross Repairs. When Scott first started in our service, he was experiencing challenges with his mental health having experienced bullying during high school. This left him with little confidence in his ability to learn or for his future. He wanted a job and to eventually move out of home but couldn’t see a pathway forwards.

Pathway Exploration

Scott was now ready to explore what a job that was a great fit for him might look like. He tried our Garden Squad program and further built his confidence and employability skills in a small social group setting. He then explored woodworking in our workshop before re-discovering his interest in welding. Over 17 months Scott then focussed on building his technical and employability skills through a combination of standardised and individualised welding projects.

A Responsive Service Design

Scott still felt he needed to work on his social confidence with a particular focus on small talk. He blossomed in confidence from a combination of our resilience program and our Dungeons and Dragons social skills program. In resilience he learnt how to re-train some of his doubts and fears about his ability and some techniques for small talk, and importantly he practiced these skills in the social setting provided by Dungeons and Dragon’s.

A Case Management Approach

An important part of empowering Scott with his learning was consistency of approach across his team of mentors. Through our case management approach, his resilience mentor also empowered his welding mentors to consistently support Scott to build his resilience in a welding setting across multiple welding sessions a week. This repetition and consistency was key for Scott’s learning success.

Working Collaboratively with our DES partnership

When Scott was ready to transition into paid open employment, we invited our DES partner Multiple Solutions to work with our career development service. Through our individualised partnership with Multiple Solutions, we were able to convey our deep understanding of what a great job for him would look like and how he could be set up for success in that role.

Multiple Solutions Business Development Manager was able to identify a welding opportunity with one of her amazing employers in the Heavy Transport Sector that was a great fit for Scott. The result of this partnership is that Scott feels at home in his new welding role and he and his family are excited about his working future. These collaborative approaches to supporting young people back into employment are vital. This model allows for each service to bring their unique skills set for the same client focussed end result.

A testimony from his family:

“We would like to take this opportunity to express that Youth Options have a high level of integrity and commitment that has worked above and beyond helping Scott achieve many goals over the last 4 years.

It has been an amazing journey seeing how Scott has challenged himself with all the wonderful caring compassionate support from all the team at Youth Options and his Mentors. Scott has become a confident young man by choosing growth and breaking through many difficult barriers. Youth Options team had taken the time to understand and interact trying different things when it was recognized that one of Scott’s strengths was in welding.

Thank you we will be forever grateful.”

Lucy came to Youth Options wanting to build on her 3 years of employment where she worked in administration roles including for an NDIS plan manager. She had the courage to know she wanted a role that was a better fit for her and engaged our career development capacity building services to build her confidence and skills to achieve this. We were inspired by Lucy’s attention to detail, diligence, customer service skills, and her commitment to dedicate herself to make a valued contribution to her future employers.

We matched her to our career development mentor who developed deep insights into Lucy as a person in order to empower her to build her confidence and skills to identify and successfully apply for roles that aligned to her career aspirations. They did this through personality quizzes, career planning, and refining her interview skills alongside another mentee who was also going through the same process as a shared learning experience.

During this time Lucy was successful in her application for a short-term contract in an administration role at the Hutt Street Centre in the Adelaide CBD. Our service empowered her with the confidence and skills to advocate for an extension of her role which she succeeded in. Her short-term contract was extended, twice, such was the extent to which the organisation valued her work.

Lucy’s self-confidence increased so much so she realised it was time to aim higher and she successfully applied for a full time administration role in the Australian Public Service in Canberra through the Aurora program. Since May 2023 she has been working as a valued member of her team and her manager has praised her work and has indicated they will support the extension of Lucy’s employment beyond the program.

Lucy has identified her role has enabled her to learn valuable project and program management skills, grow in confidence, and she is keen to continue to develop her networking skills professionally and personally.

We are so very proud of Lucy over the 4 months she was in our service and the inspiring example she sets. We wish her every success in her career!

Lucy has this to stay about her experience of her career development mentor:

I love how he believes in me and other clients. He has already shown me what I am capable of doing in the workplace. He makes me believe in myself! He takes the time to get to know me. He already knows so much. I like how he listens and encourages and doesn’t let my disability stop me from achieving what I want in my life, and that includes employment. He is super friendly and approachable and really good with people!

Chris came to our service in November 2020 wanting to gain his driver’s licence and to find a career pathway that was a great fit for him and not just any job he could get. Youth Options mentors supported Chris to complete his night time driving hours and to continue building his driving skills in readiness to sit a driving test. They also empowered Chris to identify that a career path in welding would be a great fit for him.

Over 14 months in our capacity building service, Chris built his driving skills, his welding skills, and his employability skills. Towards the end of this capacity building phase, his career development mentor also supported him to complete two work experiences, develop his job interview skills, and to sit two job interviews. During this time he also gained his driver’s licence, which is often a requirement of employment.

His career development mentor then provided transition support and empowered him to gain his first ever job, working full time at Saxon’s Engineering at Lonsdale as a non qualified welder. He received individualised support during his probation from Youth Options in partnership with his other NDIS supports. This approach paid off and he worked casually for Saxon’s for 9 months to support the company to meet a welding contract. Chris received outstanding feedback about the quality of his welding which was viewed as superior to colleagues at Saxon’s for some two decades!

After the casual employment ended with the fulfillment of the welding contract, Chris re-entered our career development services where we again empowered him to gain employment at Allin Towbars in November 2022, some two years after we began working with him. Since May 2023, Chris has been employed as a full time welder producing 4WD accessories. He is also undertaking an apprenticeship with them to gain a formal qualification in welding and to cement his place as an integral part of their team.

We are very proud of Chris and wish him the very best with his welding career.

  • Plan Trips Independently: Learn how to organise a trip to any part of metropolitan Adelaide using buses, trains, and trams;
  • Prepare for Travel: Understand when to pack which essential items for different weather conditions and travel lengths such as food, drinks, clothing, house keys, chargers, etc;
  • Ensure Safety: Develop strategies to stay safe, including what to do in emergencies;
  • Manage Metro Cards: Learn to purchase, use, and recharge Adelaide Metro cards;
  • Navigate Destinations: Gain skills and confidence to walk around unfamiliar places without getting lost;

The resilience mentoring program is for young people who understand information but find it hard to use in hands-on learning without extra help. These young folks often struggle because of their past experiences in school and how they react to learning chances.

We know that regular school might not have given them enough personal support. But since they have big dreams about getting and keeping jobs, they need to learn how to handle work on their own.

Our program helps them learn how to motivate themselves, feel more confident, and not get too scared when learning new things. This way, they can be ready for future jobs and feel more independent.

      The resilience program aims to build the capacity of mentees to make more productive decisions, more frequently, that empower them to progress more consistently and quickly on their pathway towards achieving their NDIS goals.

      This is within the context that fundamentally, stretch goals are generally not achieved because not enough time is spent consistently working towards them. This is typically because of reactions to external situations in terms of thoughts and feelings that result in a decision to cease working towards them. While these thoughts and feelings are valid and are understandable, this can result in achievable goals not being reached.

      Resilience in this context, involves their empowerment to build their skills to more consistently stay on the pathway to their goals. This includes reflecting on events that have deflected them from their pathway and anticipating possible future events that may distract them from their pathway and the capacity to make difference choices to continue on their pathway despite these. Participants learn and apply the resilience concepts through an individualised and very small group setting in a dynamic and non-clinical setting that is directly relevant to building their capacity to achieve their NDIS goals as they relate to increased community and social participation and employment.

      The concepts are underpinned by core concepts and evidence bases in: neurochemistry as it relates to neuroplasticity for learning and motivation, positive psychology, cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance commitment therapy, and behavioural change, within a framework of reward based learning.

      The resilience program empowers participants to become more:

      • Aware of what choices are within their influence that will enable them to progress towards their goals;
      • Aware of daily habits that are helping and those that are making it harder for them to achieve their goals;
      • Accepting of the behavioural change process to actively what they have learnt to progress on their pathway to achieve their goals;
      • Self-motivated;
      • Positive in their outlook of their goals and the pathway to achieve them;
      • Able to manage the fear response in the context of triggers and setting events;
      • Able to set relevant and tangible goals including reflecting on outcomes of their choices to work towards them;
      • Confident to use supports and networks in their home, community, and future work environments to help them achieve their goals.

      To better transform young lives, sometimes we need to transform ourselves.

      For more than 30 years, Employment Options has empowered marginalised young people in South Australia to transform their lives and lead a life of purpose.

      Our ability to belong and live with purpose is intrinsically linked to our capacity to learn, earn, and live.

      Over the last few years, clients, stakeholders, partners, and community have consistently told us that our name ‘Employment Options’ does not convey the breadth of the services we provide and the outcomes and impacts we achieve for clients and community.

      We consulted widely with both internal and external stakeholders to assist us in choosing a name that makes sense – Youth Options.

      We have also chosen a tag line that reflects the impact we achieve – Young Lives Transformed.

      You will still see our hashtags in social media: #EveryoneDeservesAWorkingFuture and #LearnEarnLive, including #ExpereintialLearning and #FlexibleLearningOptions.

      Youth Options will continue to help young people aged 14 to 30 to build their capacity to set and achieve their goals for a thriving future. We do this by nurturing trusted partnerships to help each person:

      • overcome their barriers
      • realise their own potential
      • safely shift self-limiting beliefs and behaviours, and
      • access the tools and support they need to explore and shape the future they imagine.

      We will continue to work with young people before they begin applying for jobs to engage them in their future.
      Our Vision, Mission and Values remain unchanged, in fact we are even more resolute to support Young South Australians achieve:

      • Satisfaction with life,
      • Living Independently in a Connected World, and
      • Benefit from Sustained Employment

      Over the next couple of months, you will notice subtle changes in our branding, messaging and marketing as we update our website, social media and marketing collateral to our new name of Youth Options.
      With YOUR support, we can continue to make sure every young person in South Australia has a real pathway to an inspired and purposeful life.

      “Together, we help people grow, feel good about themselves and hopeful for the future.”

      • Active listening: attention to both NPC dialogues and the communication from fellow players is crucial to understanding other players or NPC’s in order to make informed decisions and positively building the group dynamic;
      • Communication: through conversations with non-player characters and fellow players, group members will develop and practice clear expression of ideas, feelings, and needs;
      • Conflict resolution: throughout the campaign, players will face challenges and disagreements that require collaborative problem-solving, negotiation, and emotional regulation;
      • Teamwork: players must work together and combine their unique abilities and talents to overcome obstacles, complete missions, and defeat enemies;
      • Adaptability to change: as campaigns, battles and negotiations progress, to succeed players will have opportunity to build their adaptability skills as new information, unexpected developments, and the occasional ambush and betrayal will require quick thinking and reaction skills;
      • Acceptance: through the campaign, like in life, not everything will go according to plan, and when things don’t, this provides the players the opportunity to build their resilience and acceptance skills. Players will be empowered to learn how to not focus on the failure but instead what they can learn from it;
      • Goal setting and planning: players will be encouraged to take a proactive and considered approach to the many obstacles and challenges that they encounter. Working together as a group to identify the different possible pathways to success, identifying and weighing up risks and reward and making use of previous experience to create their own unique and optimal plans to victory;
      • Foundational Literacy and Numeracy: During the gameplay, players will be supported to build their basic literacy and numeracy skills as they roll and add up different dice, subtract damage, divide treasure, take notes, read through lore, tackle riddles and much more.

      Outcomes included jobs, first aid cert, white card, career development and getting their L’s.

      Photos of the Graduation and the Garden are available on Facebook.

      The post Success For A Working Future Through COVID19 first appeared on Youth Options.

      ]]>
      I heard a shocking stat this week that has been on my mind. Did you know at the end of March the number of people receiving jobseeker type income support in South Australia was 78,000? That is a lot of families and people affected. But what has really impacted me was at the end of May 2020 this number had grown to over 126,000. That is over 70% increase in 3 months!

      We know that this is because of COVID19 and the Prime Minister’s announcement that the JobKeeper subsidy will end in September will have further impact with the number of unemployed people increasing again. It has been described as the second cliff. I can understand why the government can’t continue with this level of financial support but still it has me worried about the sheer number of people who will be affected.

      As an organisation that believes “everyone deserves a working future” it does feel like we have to do something to help people to transition to a new career and/or job.

      Career guidance is an effective strategy that we can use at this time and make it available to people who may not normally receive this kind of support. A meta-analysis of research to the effectiveness of career development services by ACCELL* has shown that people who are given individual career development support are 2.67 times more likely to secure a job. ACCELL’s analysis is a summary of 47 independent research summaries which included 9575 individual participants, so it is valid.

      ACCELL also found that “encouraging proactivity” increases successful employment by 5.88 times. Given that the labour market will be highly competitive, I believe proactivity will be a critical factor for jobseekers. Why you may ask. According to Wikipedia (all truthful source), proactivity describes a person who is taking responsibility for his or her life, rather than looking for causes in outside circumstances or other people.

      As the labour market changes and adapts post COVID19, it is essential that jobseekers have the skills and confidence to shift with it. This will include being able to translate transferable skills to a range of industries and be able to tell an employer how they align. If you are feeling unconfident and stressed about money, this is not an easy task.

      At Employment Options we are revising our career development support to meet this demand. Over the next few weeks we will offer individual career counselling and group workshops at very affordable rates.

      Our career practitioners are experts in job search interventions that target behaviour like proactivity that result in getting a job. Please get in touch if this sounds like the help you need.

I've come across a new phrase "RIBBIT, RIBBIT, RIBBIT" which is helping me cope and will hopefully inspire others.

      The post COVID 19 – JUST RIBBIT, RIBBIT, RIBBIT! first appeared on Youth Options.

      ]]>
      At first, I thought it would be over quickly and we would all get back to normal. As time goes on though it feels hard – hard to keep trying and turn up every day. I have had a few moments when I have felt I let myself down by not being the best version of myself. The negative thoughts flowed freely!

      I am generally a optimistic and positive person except for when I am worried. It is at these times I can be judgmental, critical, controlling, indecisive and most definitely not the best version of myself. All the things I dislike in others.

      Luckily for those close to me at work I had a week’s annual leave planned. Last Friday it seemed an inconvenience although I knew deep down that I desperately needed a break. For me, this week of self-isolation has been a blessing even though it is only day 4.

      I decided – yes made a conscious decision – that I wanted to do something creative to learn new skills and find joy in being me.

      My first project was to cook something new every day that I wanted to eat without having to cater for my family tastes. Completely selfish! So far, I have made fish and chips with no other vegetables on the plate, banana pancakes to remind me of Bali, mushroom soup just because I love mushrooms and today, I am planning a cake to use up the plums we have grown.

      My second project was to make my mum a crochet rug. She lives alone and is self-isolating due to her age and heightened COVID19 risk. She has been unable to do the things she normally does to fill her days. She isn’t close by so we can only catch up remotely. She told me recently that she rings a friend every day to see how they are. My mum has always cared for others and its her way of pro-actively doing that. Why a rug? It’s to put over her knees and give her comfort – perhaps caring for others is a genetic trait we share.

      This brings me to the RIBBIT, RIBBIT, RIBBIT. My rug isn’t perfect, the sides are crooked, it’s not big enough, the stitches aren’t even and I have run out of wool. I sent a photo to my friend and colleague Jo and explained that whilst I was enjoying the process, I was wondering if I should give up. Jo is a maker at heart and gave me this wonderful advice. “Just frog what you have done to make it wider. This is your practice swatch….. I make and frog lots! It sounds like RIBBIT, RIBBIT, RIBBIT”.

      How often do we forget when we haven’t done something before that it won’t be perfect? Projects like a rug are easy to stop and put aside but there are other things in our lives that we stop when we shouldn’t because it gets hard. Employment Options believes everyone deserves a working future and we often tell young people who are trying to get a job to “persevere by keeping on trying and don’t worry about being perfect”. As adults though I think we sometimes forget to follow this advice.

      Like me not being by best self as I deal with COVID19 and the impact on our organisation. I just need to RIBBIT, RIBBIT RIBBIT – in other words – keep on trying. Dealing with COVID19 is a new skill we are all acquiring.

      Which leads me to my third project. Write a blog! I have been wanting to do this for ages as I like writing although in my day to day I only ever write for business. Its unemotional writing. Thinking about writing for pleasure has seemed like just another chore. Having finally written my first blog, it’s been pleasurable. Like my rug, my blog isn’t perfect, but I have done it. RIBBIT, RIBBIT, RIBBIT.

      Its day four of my break and I can feel the tension easing and my creativity kicking in. I’m even feeling excited about a tender that I have been putting off for weeks. I’ve learnt that being creative is good for my spirit and that I don’t have to execute everything perfectly. It feels good!

      And now I am wondering about sharing my blog as it is too long, overly personal and not perfect. Who wants to read about my experience, but I am going to be brave and share it! Maybe it will inspire others to be try something new and just RIBBIT, RIBBIT and keep on RIBBITING!

      We achieved NDIS registration in March 2019 and are now able to help people living with a disability gain meaningful employment and participate in the community. Our service area ranges from the Adelaide Hills, Murray Bridge and our Sturt Street Youth Hub. We offer an individual and tailored service to meet the needs of each client.

      This year we met “Jeff” who was struggling with relationships at work and was at risk of losing his job. We coached Jeff over the year to help learn new skills and understand workplace norms. We also helped Jeff’s employer understand why he was behaving the way he was and how they could better support him to be engaged at work. As a result, Jeff has a new position within his workplace which is better suited to his interests and skills. Today he feels like a valuable team member and isn’t worried about losing his job. Our experience with Jeff and his workplace shows that great results can be achieved when we work collaboratively.

      The Pathfinder Program is acknowledged by our partners and stakeholders as a valuable and impactful service for their job seekers or students because it develops motivation, raises aspirations, provides a structured format to explore career opportunities and develop an action plan.

      School Testimonial:

      “The Pathfinder Program has been very beneficial to students at Birdwood High School. The students enrolled in the course were the students who were typically a behavioural problem, disengaged with school and not intending to get their SACE. They were the students who wanted to leave school and get a job, or students that were struggling with their learning and self-confidence. When the students began the pathfinder program, they were uncertain about their strengths, abilities and possible future jobs and careers. They lacked a sense of direction and purpose. After the course the home group teachers noted a difference in their behaviour and attitude to school. Course counselling and subject selection is normally a challenging time for home group teachers. Their comments to me were that the students who engaged in the Pathfinder program were very easy to work with. They engaged in the time made available for choosing subjects and this was a relatively easy task for them compared to students who had not done the course. The students continue to work on preparing themselves for the world of work by completing their resumes, asking for teachers to be referees and being proactive in finding out about and seeking employment and training”. – Assistant Principal, Birdwood High School

      Student Testimonial:

      “I feel like the Pathfinder program was very beneficial for me. It helped me understand what kind of career pathway to take and it defiantly broadened my mind to what I am capable of. I used to have the negative mindset that I couldn’t achieve big, but the pathfinder program changed my perception on things. I am really happy I decided to do the program, I believe I learned more in those 6 weeks than I did during actual school lessons.” – Shaya, Mt Barker High School

      Our Career Services had an impact on many people over 2018/2019. It’s a vital service given that most people will have five to seven career changes over their working life.

      “Ian” was injured whilst serving in the Australian Defence Force. He came to us to undertake a comprehensive career transition program supported by the ADF. After translating his defence skills and competencies and researching the labour market, Ian realised he wanted to re-train as a bookkeeper. We also helped him improve his job search skills with outstanding results. Ian was offered two jobs in just one week and has subsequently secured ongoing employment and tells us he loves his new career!

      It just goes to show that the research is right. People who access qualified career development support are twice as likely to find work than those that don’t.

      In April 2019, we commenced our Greenlight2Work program in the Murraylands to help address youth unemployment in the area with assistance to gain a learner’s permit to drive and career development support which includes knowledge about labour market opportunities in the region.

      The program has had early success with participants like “Amy” who needed support to engage with the community, gain confidence, get her Learners permit and identify suitable career direction and opportunities. At first Amy was very shy. We gave her individual support until she was confident to engage with the small group. Once feeling more confident Amy joined the learner’s permit program and has since gained her learners permit. She was also given career development support where she was able to identify her strengths and passions. Amy now works at a local distribution centre and loves her job.

      Our proudest moment for Amy was when she was able to help other participants learn their road rules towards the end of the program and stand up in front of the class to lead learning activities.

      We understand that occasionally issues may arise, and you may have a complaint. This document explains how we handle complaints and gives information about how you can make your complaint.

      Youth Options is committed to its responsiveness to the needs and concerns of our service users. Any complaint, dispute, appeal or feedback received will be treated as an opportunity to gather essential information about issues affecting service users, stakeholders and other interested parties, and as an opportunity to improve our services.

      Complaints can be made to Youth Options, or through other avenues such as the relevant Government Department, Ombudsman, or Commissioner. Some contact details are included in this document, and staff can help in locating contact details for other agencies.

      How we Handle Complaints

      Visibility and Access

      Information about how and where to complain will be well publicised to all our service users, staff and stakeholders.

      Our processes for making a complaint aim to be accessible to all, including people with specific needs (for example, for an interpreter)

      Customer-Focused Approach

      Youth Options acknowledges the right of service users and the public to complain when dissatisfied with a service, and encourages feedback from service users, staff and the public generally.

      We expect our staff to be ‘complaints friendly’ and not defensive or negative about feedback and complaints. Complainants have the right to have support in making a complaint and the right to be protected from any form of retribution.

      Responsiveness

      Complaints will be acknowledged and addressed promptly; complainants will be treated courteously and kept informed of the progress of their complaint through the complaints handling process. If a process may take more than 60 days, you will be notified in writing, and kept informed of progress.

      Objectivity

      Each complaint will be addressed in an equitable, objective and unbiased manner through the complaints handling process.

      Charges

      There will be no charge to complainants for making a complaint, nor for accessing the complaints handling process

      Confidentiality

      Information about a complainant will be used only for addressing the complaint within Youth Options, and will be actively protected from disclosure, unless the complainant expressly consents to its disclosure.

      Investigation of complaints

      Every reasonable effort will be made to investigate all the relevant circumstances and information surrounding a complaint. Investigations will be conducted in a fair and objective manner and will ensure natural justice is observed wherever practicable.

      Resolution of complaints

      Following an appropriate investigation, Youth Options will offer a response, for example, to correct the problem and prevent it happening in the future. This will be communicated to the complainant as quickly as possible.

      Complaints will be resolved with as little formality and dispute as possible, and the remedy sought by the complainant will always be considered as a first option.

      Complainants will be provided with progress reports if quick resolution of their complaint is not possible.

      Accountability

      Youth Options will ensure accountability by assigning responsibility for all aspects of complaints receipt and handling, and through the monitoring of complaint trends and outcomes by senior management.

      Continual Improvement

      Our complaints handling process is reviewed periodically to enhance effectiveness

      What to do if you have a complaint

      We encourage you to start by discussing your issue with the staff member who is assisting you, or with the staff member you have an issue with.

      If you can’t, or don’t want to do that, you can ask to speak to:

      The Operations Manager
      The Program Manager of the program you have an issue with, or
      You may also put your complaint in writing if you prefer and address it to any of these managers.

      Your complaint, appeal or assessment review request will be recorded in our complaints and appeals register, and a senior staff member will work with you to resolve your issue as quickly as possible.

      We have currently directly empowered 13 eight young people to achieve their provisional P1 driver’s licence. We are incredibly proud of each and every one for the example they have set in their courage and commitment to achieve an incredible milestone on their pathway to live a life of purpose.

      Drive Me Badge

      Drive Me (P’s Program)

      Drive Me is a Driving Experience Mentoring Program to help you get the required 75 hours for your P’s. The goal of this program is to overcome your challenges for getting your P’s, increase opportunities to learn about employment or traineeships, and acquire necessary skills and develop good driving behaviour.

        • To start the Drive Me Program a minimum of 4 lessons must be completed with a professional driving instructor.
        • We will provide you with a Trained Driving Mentor (Responsible Supervising Driver) and the use of our modified car
        • You will participate in a four-hour road safety program, before driving practice commences
        • To attain the required 75 hours, you will attend 1.5 hours twice per week for one2one mentored driving practice. The time and day is negotiated with you and our NDIS Mentor

      Please Note:

      • The hours required to achieve the P’s depends on the participant progress and capabilities. (everyone is different)
      • The program includes an estimated 60 kilometres per session of activity based transport. Please note only actual distance driven will be invoiced.
      • Final driving test (VORT) must be successfully completed with a professional driving instructor; this cost is not included in Drive Me Program.

      This program can be funded under Core Supports or Capacity Building Supports depending on your available NDIS funding.
      NB: If using capacity building funding to access the program, the cost of the VORT will need to be self-funded.
